Case Study

The City of Ekurhuleni is one of the six Metropolitan Municipalities in South Africa, made up of nine previous cities and towns around the Southern and Eastern part of Johannesburg. Revenue income generated from the sales of electricity is about $800 Million US per annum.

The City has taken a strategic decision to meter all large commercial and industrial customers using Meteringonline.  There are currently about 4500 meters being read on a daily basis using Meteringonline with an additional rollout of more than 2000 meters during the first half of 2010. About 50 per cent of the Metro's total income is achieved by means of this reliable system.

According to the General Manager: Electricity and Energy for the Metro, Mark Wilson, Ekurhuleni find the system highly reliable and extremely useful for both the City and their larger customers.

"We are of the opinion that Meteringonline is a world-class product which certainly assists us to manage our demand meters in a way that ensures that the City generate accurate accounts and achieve an error free record in this regard."

The City gains accurate metering, with regular checks confirming that primary measuring equipment is still operating fine, whilst customers gain a visual picture of their account, including graphs and the ability to simulate tariffs, accounts and so forth.

South Africa is in the midst of a power crisis and Ekurhuleni Metro are of the opinion that empowering large customers by means of Meteringonline will see the much needed reductions in electricity consumption that is required.  Interventions effected by the customer are clearly visible on this system and displayed in a format that is easily interpreted by administration and accounting staff.  Inefficiencies in operations can be detected by the customer and changes may be effected to create a more efficient load profile.
